KOTA KINABALU: A victory it was, but Sabah certainly need to put up a better show if they are to progress further in the FA Cup competition.

While they may deservedly march into the next round in the tournament that they last won 12 years go, it will take a lot more from the Rhinos to go further than just the second round. “We certainly need to improve,” Rahman Zakaria admitted.

“We committed too many silly mistakes, and we must try to minimise it. If we can do that I think we will look a (more) better side,” the Rhinos team manager added.

“We look a bit rusty, and I think it was because this was our first competitive game in after the two weeks break.

“But still we cannot make it as an excuse because the mistakes that we made can be avoided if we were more focussed in the game.

Nevertheless, Rahman is delighted that they managed to clear the first hurdle.

“I think despite our ‘look-rusty’ performance, we still deserved the victory. When you look at the game, we created more chances than them and could have ended the game with a bigger score line, but we failed to convert our chances.

“I’m also delighted to see that the players have given their best. They have shown a high fighting spirit, strong determination and commitment.

Though Polish striker Arkadiusz Jerzy Zarlzynski failed to find the net, Rahman was pleased by the performance of the new signing.

“Like Obi (Charles) he has been brilliant, and I think he will get even better. This was only his first game, and given time, I think, he will be able to give more to the team.

Rahman also thanked the fans who turned up for the match.

“Although the numbers (fans) has not been encouraging, we really appreciate these fans, who has been very loyal to the team. It is the hope of the team that more fans will come for our future games.

The second round of the competition has been tentatively fixed for March 27, with the draw conducted on March 14.

Sabah’s next game is against Perak in a Malaysia Cup tie at the Likas Stadium on Saturday.
