KOTA KINABALU: Zaykiel Leong netted a brace to help his side to a bright start in the FAM Cup League challenge.

The ex-Rhino striker scored twice after the break as the State’s sole representative in the country’s third division registered a hard-fought 2-1 victory over FELDA FC of Kuala Lumpur.

The match played at the Penampang Stadium yesterday saw the visiting FELDA FC stun the homesters when Khairul Izwan Khalid headed in the opener.

Beverly FC, strengthened by a majority of ex-State players – senior and Reserve League – were the early aggressors.

And they managed to create half chances inside the first 10 minutes of the game. However, Zaykiel saw his 4th minute attempt go wide, while Zulhelmy’s powerful drive from inside the box went over the crossbar.

Then in a quick counter attack, FELDA FC stunned the homesters when Mohd Izad Effendi’s perfect cross from the left found Khairul Izwan, who easily headed home the opener from close range, defeating the hapless Beverly FC custodian Mohd Yusri Jamrin.

The first half ended 1-0 in favour of the visitors.

After the break, Beverly FC doubled their efforts, and showed some possession football as they forced the visitors to camp in their own half.

And in the 62nd minute, their efforts finally paid off as Zaykiel put them on level terms.

The striker, who once donned State colours with his last appearance two years ago, easily finished off a Zulhelmy cross from the right.

Eight minutes later, Zaykiel was on target again. This time it was Vun Ket Ming @ Billyton who turned the provider.

Billyton’s free-kick from the left side of the FELDA FC goalmouth found Zaykiel, who then back-heeled the ball into the back of the FELDA FC net.

More than a thousand fans, including the football-loving Sabah FA President Datuk Anifah Aman, turned up for the match.
