KOTA KINABALU: It was a case of missed chances for the junior Rhinos as they succumbed to a shock 1-0 defeat to Pahang in a President’s Cup challenge at the Likas Stadium yesterday.
The home side missed a string of scoring opportunities before eventually bowing out to Che Rozaihairi’s 54th minute strike, which turned out to be the winner.
It was the junior Rhinos’ second home defeat after the loss to Police about two weeks ago. Then they also went down with the same scoreline.
Ironically, the junior Rhinos have defeated both their opponents in away battles before being beaten on home turf.
For the record, they edged Police 1-0 and Pahang 2-1.
The junior Rhinos put up yet another convincing show, but just could not find the much needed goal despite having at least half a dozen goal-scoring opportunities.
The first one came in the 18th minute when David Johney found himself unmarked inside Pahang’s penalty box.
However, despite only having the keeper to beat, he saw his attempt blocked by the Pahang keeper.
Then striker Ishak Alias squandered another opportunity when his attempt from five yards out sailed above the cross-bar.
Skipper Clarrey Tabad also had a share at Pahang’s goalmouth, but also saw his attempt go wide.
After the break, the junior Rhinos continued their domination, but only to find themselves trailing when the unmarked Che Rozaihairi unleashed a grounder from inside the box, defeating the hapless Sabah custodian Salawi Md Jasad.
Despite trailing, the junior Rhinos had enough chances to at least end the game in a draw.
For instance in the 75th minute, Ishak saw his powerful header hit the crossbar.
Then later on, the young striker again failed to find the net as he squandered another opportunity. He had only the keeper to beat. However, he took too much time on the ball as he lost the ball before he could unleash a shot at the onrushing Pahang custodian.
