MISSION ACCOMPLISHED … Beverly FC players and officials celebrate after the clash yesterday.
KOTA KINABALU: Beverly FC are the FAM Cup League 2007 champions.
Despite being held to a two-all draw by Persatuan Bolasepak Kuala Terengganu, it was mission accomplished for Beverly FC, as the one point gained from the match at the Penampang Stadium yesterday was all that they needed to be untouchable at the top of the nine-team standings.
With 33 points after 15 matches, no other team can pip them from the top spot with their closest rivals, Proton FC, six points behind.
There is only one match to be played for all the teams, except for MP Muar who ended their season yesterday at home to DBKL.
Sabah will conclude the League fixtures by taking on FELDA United FC away on June 3.
And now Beverly FC will go into the FAM Cup competition where the top eight teams will be divided into two groups (league – home and away) with the two top teams in the respective groups meeting in the crossover semi-finals, with the two best teams pitted against each other to decide the winners.
Yesterday, Beverly FC had the best of starts by taking a two-goal first-half lead with Zaykiel Leong scoring the opener, before Rezuan Aman Khan extended the lead.
But a lapse of concentration, coupled with Vun Ket Ming @ Billyton’s sending off in the 73rd minute saw the home side allowing the visiting team to make a fight-back.
In the first 15 minutes, Beverly FC created at least three half chances with the first coming in the ninth minute when Zuraindey Jumai’s corner kick found Rezuan.
Unfortunately, Rezuan’s attempt was stopped by the keeper.
Two minutes later, Billyton found space inside the penalty box, but PBD Kuala Terengganu’s custodian Ismail Abdul Rahman was alert enough to push the ball away for a corner.
Then from the ensuing corner, Zaykiel saw his header blocked by the custodian.
In the 30th minute, Beverly FC finally managed to find the much-needed goal when Zaykiel unleashed a powerful grounder from the right side of the goalmouth after a long pass from Zuraindey.
And Beverly FC could have been 2-0 up in the 40th minute when Zuraindey only had the keeper to beat, but unfortunately his close range effort sailed over the crossbar.
In the 44th minute, it could have been 1-1 when Ali Mohd Aliff was left unmarked inside the Beverly FC penalty box, but his attempt rebounded off the crossbar.
PBD Kuala Terengganu had their second chance to score the equaliser when Shafuan Adli Shaari picked up the rebound, but to the disappointment of his team-mates, his close range attempt went wide.
In a lightning counter attack, Beverly FC extended their lead on the stroke of half time when Rezuan slammed home a grounder off a low cross with Zuraindey the provider.
There was not much action early in the second half as Beverly FC slowed down the tempo.
But when Billyton was shown the red card after picking up his second yellow, things started to change as it was the visitors who started to dominate.
And flanker Sy. Sabri Sy. Mansur managed to reduce the deficit for PBD Kuala Terengganu with a close range effort in the 80th minute, before second-half substitute Mohd Fairuz Hamizan put his side on level terms with his 88th minute glancing header off a corner taken by fellow substitute Armi Sharif.
