PETALING JAYA: The FA of Malaysia's (FAM) competitions committee ruled on Monday that Selangor will take on Terengganu and Negri Sembilan will play against Sabah in the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Cup competition.
Selangor and Negri advanced to the knockout stage of the competition from the three-group preliminaries as winners of Group A and B respectively. Terengganu and Sabah made the cut as the two best third-placed teams from Group B and C.
The initial draw had Selangor up against Sabah while Negri were pitted against Terengganu. But the FAM decided on a change to avoid having two teams from the same group playing against each other again in the quarter-finals.
The competitions committee chairman, Datuk Raja Ahmad Zainuddin Raja Omar, said: “There seemed to be a confusion on the match-ups for the Malaysia Cup quarter-finals.
“We ended up having two teams from the same group – Negri and Terengganu – up against each other again in the quarter-finals. But we cannot allow this to happen. It would be unfair to the two teams.
“The competitions committee have decided that Selangor will now have to play against Terengganu and Negri will play against Sabah. There is no change to the other two match-ups.”
The other two quarter-final ties will have Kedah up against Malacca and defending champions Perlis against Perak.
