HISTORIC … Beverly FC players and officials celebrate after the victory. Mat Amin is seen standing behind second from right.
KUALA LUMPUR: Ten-man Beverly FC edged Felda United FC 1-0 to historically march into the final of the TM FAM Cup on a 3-1 aggregate victory.
They won the first leg encounter 2-1 at the Likas Stadium last week and yesterday’s victory proved that their entry into the final in the competition was no fluke.
They will now face Proton FC in the decider, likely to be played on August 19, with the venue yet to be announced.
Proton FC ousted DBKL on the away goals rule after notching a 1-0 victory in the return leg tie. The first leg encounter was won by DBKL 2-1.
A delighted team manager Mat Amin Samsuddin when met after the game played at the Uniten Mini Stadium in Bangi congratulated the players for a job well done.
While admitting that the game could have gone either way, he saluted the players for the guts they showed throughout the game, especially after the sending off of flanker Vun Ket Ming @ Billyton in the 56th minute of the game.
“We are all happy because this was a tough game. They never made it easy for us, but I’m glad to see that the players played their hearts out to eventually win the game.
“I think we deserve to be in the final. I think we are one of the most consistent sides in the competition and it is a great feeling to be in the final,” Mat Amin said.
To a question, Mat Amin said: “Let’s not talk about the final as yet. Let’s enjoy this feeling for a bit … we all know it is not over yet.”
“But when we return home (Monday), then we have to give our fullest concentration on the big game,” he added.
Striker Zaykiel Leong turned hero for his side by netting the winner in the 65th minute off a free-kick taken by skipper Azlan Ariffin.
Beverly started the game brightly and could have taken the lead through Zuraindey Jumai.
The midfielder was left unmarked at the right side of the field and managed to dribble the ball into the Felda United FC half before unleashing a shot from outside the box that went wide.
Towards the end of the first half, Zakaria Abdul Rahman squandered a golden opportunity to put Beverly FC ahead when he only had the keeper to beat after beating the off-side trip.
However, the nippy striker failed to convert his chance as his shot was deflected by an onrushing defender, for a fruitless corner.
After the break, Beverly FC coach Awang Sabtu Jamil brought in Restu Emat for Zakaria.
But Restu’s introduction did not change the game as Felda United FC kept on pressurising them.
Things looked worse for Beverly FC when Billyton was shown the red card for a second yellow card offence 11 minutes into the game.
However, his sending off proved to be a blessing in disguise as about nine minutes or so later, Billyton’s brother Zaykiel drew first blood for his side, which proved to be the winning goal at the end of the day.
