Kota Kinabalu: Rhinos Team Manager, Rahman Zakaria, wants his players to keep their momentum going after winning their second straight home match against Melaka at the Likas Stadium here, Friday.
The Rhinos took the three points courtesy of a single goal by Leopold Alfonso Otong five minutes after the break.
A delivery from Zainizam Marjan from the opposite side of goal landed at the feet of the number 26 striker (Leopold) who tapped the ball from close range into the net to give his team the lead and eventually the victory.
“We are happy with the win as any team would be. This is the second straight victory for us at home and we really are very happy about it. All the players are happy, I’m happy, the coach is happy, everyone is happy.
“I hope the players would be able to maintain this momentum that they seem to have going. I know they have the ability to win, its just maybe sometimes they lack the confidence when playing away from home,” said Rahman.
He told Daily Express this when contacted, yesterday.
When asked to share his comments on the team’s stand-in coach, Mohd Asyraaf Fong Abdullah, Rahman said it was a job well done considering it was his first assignment.
“I am happy he made a good start. I hope he can do more to improve the team,” said Rahman, who declined to comment further to avoid putting any unnecessary pressure on the new man.
Asyraaf has temporarily taken over Iraqi coach, Wathiq Naji Jasim’s role and is now a stand-in coach.
The Sabah FA has relieved Wathiq of his duty, amid speculation of personal problems and poor performance from the team.
The Rhinos are scheduled to square off against T-Team from Terengganu in an away match on Monday (July 6), but the match has been tentatively postponed until further notice due to sold-out flight tickets.
Their next match will be against PKNS FC at the Likas Stadium here on Friday (July 10). The Rhinos are currently fourth from the bottom in the TM Premier League 13-team standings.
