Kota Kinabalu: Sabah put on a great show at the Likas Stadium here last night (Friday) when they beat Police 3-1 for a winning start in the second round of this season’s Premier League campaign.
Bobby Gonzales and Razlan Oto were the celebrated heroes in this match, which showed the local fans what exactly the team is capable of.
The fans had to wait until the second half before their team gave them a reason to jump out of their seats.
Bobby scored the first goal in the 61st minute, while Razlan struck at the Police defence with goals in the 67th and 83rd minutes.
Zainizam Marjan played the ball to an unmarked Bobby, who dribbled the ball in before delivering a magnificent grounder at the edge of goal for the opener.
But just as Sabah were sensing a glorious back to back victory, captain Afis Amizudin managed to hit one back for Police to level the game.
The ball was blasted past keeper Azizon Abdul Kadir from an almost impossible angle, which left Sabah fans silenced with the shocking goal.
Police suddenly seemed spirited to fight to win the match but a swift response from Razlan just three minutes later put Sabah back in the lead and bound for victory.
Razlan found himself in a one on one position with keeper Muhammad Hamdan Fairi before firing the ball into the net. Zainizam again was instrumental in the build up with a pass from the centre of the field that found Razlan, who was in the perfect position to strike.
Sabah then had a golden opportunity to make it 3-1 in the 74th minute but Bobby failed to convert a superb delivery from Zainizam.
But the forgone opportunity was quickly forgotten when Razlan netted his second goal which sealed the victory.
Overall the match showed how the home team has improved significantly from their playing ways earlier in the season.
They had better ball control and better movement around the pitch and showed they can work better now as a team.
More performances like this will surely see them moving up the table for the title contention and Super League promotion.
