The Perils of Coaching

After 7 completed rounds of the 2011 Malaysian Super League , interesting to note that we already have three (3) coaching casualties .

Two of these coaches in Mostakeen Omar from Perlis and Wan Jamak from Negeri Sembilan have resigned sighting INTERFERENCE as their reason for quitting . Although not a new dilemma for both Malaysian & SE Asian Football , make no mistake this is a cancer that needs addressing & fast .

Just as an Architect , Doctor or Lawyer would take offence at being instructed how to do his job by non qualified people , a Professional Football Coach is also entitled to do his job with a free reign. Teams appoint a coach because they believe him to be the best man for the job so why not allow him do his job unrestricted to the best of his ability .

It takes up to 10 years to go through the process of getting your Level C , B and ultimately A licence which gives you the accreditation to coach a Professional Football team . Unlike most career’s , there is little or no security in being a coach , a few losses here & there and you could be out of a job . I for one fully understand a Professional Football Coach’s need to maintain his integrity by coaching his way and one cant help but admire coaches who stand up for their belief’s and don’t cave in to the interference .

Can you imagine Sir Alex Ferguson or Jose Mourinio being instructed by management before a game on who to select or getting an sms on the bench advising him to sub Berbatov & bring on Hernandez . Sir Alex or Mourinio simply would not tolerate such nonsense so therefore why should coaches in this region accept it either .

No doubt Football creates opinion like no other sport and everyone is entitled to an opinion . But too many chiefs and not enough Indians is a phrase applicable to Football in this region . In Europe, Football clubs would have a Management & Coaches meeting for Pre Season , Mid Season & End Season . They would discuss many factors including recruitment , targets for next season and general things in order to improve the running of the Football club – these are the times when certain things can be discussed between coaches & management .

At the end of the day , coaches accept the cut throat industry and path that they have chosen . They are working day in , day out doing the best possible job they can – all they want is to be successful or unsuccessful based on there own Football principles & methodology .

Between 02nd April & 10th May our beloved Sabah Hawks will play a total off 12 games in what will no doubt be a season defining period . To play Saturdays & Tuesdays non stop over a period off 6 weeks will require the utmost professionalism and detailed preparation from the players in what will be the most physically demanding period of the season .

Of course all 14 teams face the same hectic schedule but what makes the Hawks different is the amount of travelling required . Flying to KL takes 150 minutes which is followed by another flight or bus trip unless playing in KL . After the first away game another trip is required for 2nd away game which is followed by the long trip home . Two home games and the travelling process is to be repeated once again .

Players will be constantly away from there families during this period and its imperative they remain mentally strong and the team spirit provides a togetherness within the group . The good news is that the class of 96 coped with a similar heavy schedule successfully so it can be done . By the 10th May we will have a better guide of where the team is heading for 2011 . Good luck lads .

Sir Alex Ferguson calls it “squeaky bum time” when talking about the run in to the English Premier League title . With 8 games remaining Man Utd hold a 5 point lead over Arsenal who have a game in hand .

I am a huge fan off the style and artistry displayed by this Arsenal team – only Barcelona play more attractive Football . However , in Iniesta & Xavi , Barca have the two most complete central midfielders in World Football . What makes them different from Fabregas & Nasri is their ability to roll up their sleeves when the going gets tough .

For until Arsenal develop some spine & mongrel in their team and learn how to win even when playing badly , I am afraid their trophy cabinet will remain bare .

I am tipping the worst Man Utd team in 10 years to lift the EPL trophy on 22nd May .

Then he won the Golden Boot in 1995 and 1996, helping Sabah to win her first ever trophy, the FA Cup and the league title in 1996.
