Sabah on alert after Philippine quake
BY LOURDES CHARLES AND MUGUNTAN VANAR

KOTA KINABALU: Thousands of people living in coastal areas of Sabah grabbed their children and whatever belongings they could after a strong earthquake shook southern Philippines.

Bukit Aman placed the Sabah police on alert at 8.56pm after an earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale was recorded with its epicentre in the seas south of Mindanao island.

The Philippines Institute of Vulcanlogy and Seismology placed the magnitude of the quake at 6.9 and said it was tectonic in origin but gave no possible tsunami occurrence.

The Malaysian Metrological Department also received a similar report and the police were informed there would be no tsunami effect but they went on alert as a precautionary measure.

However, people panicked after the alert went out as the warning came three days after a tremor in the interior Ranau district sent shivers into the village folk.

News organisations including The Star were flooded with calls from people asking whether Kudat in the north of Sabah and Lahad Datu in the east coast were under water while people in Tuaran near here were caught in traffic jams as they fled towards Mount Kinabalu.

Police were seen in many places calming the nerves of many people after midnight as they refused to leave mosques and other higher ground for fear that a tsunami might occur.

The epicentre of the earthquake was about 500km from Den Haven near Lahad Datu in the east coast.

“We have alerted all our OCPDs to be on alert and coastal people were informed about the quake without creating panic,” Sabah Deputy Police Commissioner SAC I Mohd Bakri Zinin said last night.

He said police operations rooms were activated right down from Kudat until Tawau on the south-east coast.

The alert, the first ever tsunami alert in the country, was sent out by the Prime Minister’s Department-based Crisis and Disaster Centre management directorate after the Meteorological Services Department informed it about the Philippine earthquake.

Centre director Senior Asst Comm Datuk Muhamad Muda said parts of Sabah, especially Kota Kinabalu, Tawau and several costal areas felt the tremor.

“Our department immediately sent out the alert to the Malaysian Control Centre which relayed the message to the Sabah police, military, information ministry and the local Meteorological Department.

“They in turn went to the ground and made a risk assessment before alerting the people at the ground level to be on alert following the tremor,” he told The Star.

SAC Muhamad Muda said the alert from “Priority” was scaled down to “Standby” after more than an hour as a tsunami would have hit an area about 30 minutes or so after the earthquake.

This, however, failed to calm the nerves of Sabahans, especially those living in the east coast.

Kedudukan Gempa bumi yang berlaku pada 5 Februari 2005. Kekuatan ialah pada 7.2 ritcher dan pada kedalaman 486.3km

UPDATE 5 Februari 11:00pm

Secara kebetulan pula telah berlaku gempa bumi di Laut Celebes selatan Filipina.

Kedudukan gempa ialah pada kedudukan berikut:

Lokasi : 5.36 Utara, 123.23 Timur
Kekuatan Gempa : 7.2 ritcher
Kedalaman: 486.3km
Tarikh : 5 Februari 2005
Masa : 8:23.15 malam waktu Malaysia

Walaubagaimanapun kita faham bahawa kemungkinan "TRAUMA ACHEH" masih menghantui pemikiran orang ramai.

LANJUT

Kota Kinabalu – Two elderly women died after fleeing their homes following a tsunami scare in Malaysia's Sabah state on Borneo island, local media said on Tuesday.

Eyah Aris, 66, was among over 1 000 villagers who had fled their homes to a mosque at the top of a nearby hill for fear of a tsunami after a strong earthquake hit the neighbouring Philippines last Saturday, the Bernama news agency said.

Eyah, who suffered from asthma, experienced breathing difficulties and died hours after reaching the mosque.

Tiambun Mansir, 73, also died of exhaustion early on Monday after climbing a hill near her house on Saturday, the New Straits Times said.

Tiambun's relatives said she tried to rush up a hill after officials warned of a possible tsunami but developed breathing difficulties, the newspaper said.

Thousands of people in Sabah fled coastal areas for higher ground when the official warning came after an earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale struck the southern Philippines late on Saturday.

The earthquake had its epicentre in the sea south of Mindanao island, about 500 kilometres from Dent Haven near Lahad Datu on Sabah's east coast.

A total of 68 people died in Malaysia, mostly in the northern resort island of Penang, following the December 26 tsunamis which killed more than 294 000 people across the Indian Ocean.

My deepest and most sincere condolences to Eyah’s & Tiambun’s family. May God bless them.  Siapakah yang patut disalahkan ???
